A Misstep

Seven didn’t dare check the video to see if he’d captured the president’s supernatural move—he didn’t want any flash of light or accidental sound to draw attention to him in his little hiding place. And he wasn’t confident enough yet on how the phone worked to trust that the volume of the video was really off. Instead he clicked to send the video to the team in a text message.

But the video wouldn’t send, and the text message yelled at Seven with an angry red exclamation point. He frowned, feeling personally attacked. Then he remembered he had airplane mode turned on. He’d have to wait.

Greta Stone’s familiar voice floating through the speakers startled Seven. “Sorry about that turbulence,” she said, not exactly sounding sorry. “We’ll be landing soon. Buckle up.”

Seven pressed against the emergency door, then returned his phone to the wall pocket space, hiding it behind the floatation devices again. He hung on and tried not to freak out as they tipped and bounced onto the runway. He could only imagine if Birdie were the camouflaged one and this had been her mission. That turbulence and landing would have had her puking left and right. Puke coming out of nowhere? What a surprise that would be for the others on the plane! The thought of it made him grin and kept him from thinking much worse things, like what he would do if any of the criminals discovered him.

But they had other things on their minds, too. Troy, Martim, and President Fuerte took their belongings and deplaned, and soon Greta emerged from the cockpit and followed them, closing the boarding door behind her. Seven breathed a sigh of relief when no mechanics or other people came on board. He flopped on his back and melted into the carpet, exhausted from the stress. But then he sat up just as quickly. He retrieved his phone, turned off airplane mode, and called The Librarian.

He waited, but there was no ringing sound. After a few seconds, a recorded voice came on the line. “Welcome to Frayzia. Your cellular plan is not in service in this area. Please contact your carrier to enable international roaming. Fees may apply.” Seconds later, a text message appeared saying the exact same thing.

To Seven, the words were like a foreign language. He ended the call, swiped the message away, and tried calling Birdie, but got the same recording. “Who is my carrier?” he muttered, stabbing the button to end the call. Next he tried sending the video to Cabot and Lada in a text message. But the video failed to go through again. “Augh!” he said too loudly, and had to go peer out the window to make sure no one had heard him. But the hangar they were parked in was empty. He went back to his space. Hello, he typed in the text box, and pressed “send.” It, too, was rejected by the angry exclamation mark.

Frustrated, Seven tossed the phone to the carpet. He balled up his fists and furiously rubbed his eyes with them.
